NSW State Cup

Coffs Harbour Volleyball Association took 3 teams down to Newcastle to compete in the NSW State Cup round on the 14th and 15th of May.

CHVA’s Ladies team was made up of Rebekah Abood, Monique Dickens, Kate Gersbach, Amy Kay, Heidi Paynter, Yoko Ticli and Candy Yip. This is the first all ladies team to represent Coffs Harbour in a state event for many years. Competing against well rehearsed teams from NSW, the girls improved their game throughout the weekend and showed everyone they have the ability and motivation to cause some upsets in the future. Yoko and Bek did a great job controlling play when setting; Amy and Kate were hustling, feeding the balls and attacking as outside hitters; Candy and Monique used their height to pressure the opponents, with some awesome blocks and middle attacks. Heidi Paynter lead the way as the MVP for her all round contributions in passing, serving and attacking plays.

CHVA Division 1 Men’s team came up against strong competition from mainly Sydney based teams. The games provided tight, tough, entertaining and fast volleyball. Running the show were Chris Paynter and Oz Ikiz, setting up plays and dictating attacking raids. The Raiders were Paul Jones, Tony Loader and brothers Ryan and Damon Bienefelt. The boys swung hard all weekend with relentless abandon. Centre blockers Lukas Holland and Luke Dickens were running their plays through the middle and putting up blocks that challenged the opposition.

CHVA Division 2 Men played against teams from Sydney, Newcastle and Armidale. Jono Ticli led the way with his Blocking, setting and hitting prowess. Adam Kay and Adrian Gersbach were his wingmen; helping out with setting, hustling and attacking. Spikers bringing home the bacon were Kyle Banks, Marty Buhler, Davi Sandhu and Ben Hutchinson. Marty showed his experience and lead the way for 15 y/o Ben and first time rep player Davi to swing outside. Ben Sims smashed his way through the middle with no mercy for the other teams. The guys made it to the Grand final for their division, going down to the wire in a physical, heated and vocal game.
